Financial institutions have faced increased scrutiny surrounding their ethical practices following the Great Recession of 2008. This has placed additional pressure on boards of directors to manage the ethical reputation of the banks they serve. In an article published in the Journal of Business Ethics, researchers Emilia and Sami Vähämaa, Laura Baselga-Pascual, and Antonio Trujillo-Ponce hypothesize that a positive relationship exists between director characteristics favoring effective oversight and the ethical reputation of their financial institutions.

Why Banks Value Navigability in Board Management Software
When your bank has the opportunity to gather industry veterans with centuries of experience between them into a single room to make decisions that affect its future, every moment counts. Working fast should never be a goal when “fast” comes at the expense of making well-informed decisions. However, streamlining aspects of your board meetings leaves more time for directors to deliberate on important topics. There are, of course, many ways to streamline your board meetings. Today, however, we’re going to focus on just one: navigating your governance technology.
Continue readingWhat Bank Boards Lose When They Use the Wrong Technology
Earlier this month, Directorpoint published an article in BankDirector.com. In it, we discussed the “magic” of a board meeting. Rarely does a bank have the opportunity to bring decades of experience together in one room to make the decisions that determine its future. It begs the question, then: when the stakes are high and the moment fleeting, why waste a single second?

The ability to create and share surveys is one of the most useful tools software like Directorpoint can offer a college board. Navigating the selection of a board software provider can place undo stress on college boards. With many vendors offering nearly identical solutions, each claiming their own to be superior, prioritizing minute differentiators can make a major difference. In this article, we’re taking a closer look at one difference among board software providers that’s costing college boards a fortune.
Continue readingBank Boards: Don’t Spread Your Portal Across Multiple Apps
From a management standpoint, bank boards walk a thin line when implementing a board portal; a line that exists, in part, due to the challenge that arises in overcoming a learning curve. How do you ask a group of people with decades of expertise to learn something new? There’s no way to get around it. Seamless design is great for mitigating the curve, but it doesn’t eliminate it. Introducing new technology to your board of directors is too complex and delicate a task to cover in this article (or any one article, for that matter).
Instead we’re going to focus on a major pitfall bank boards fall into when implementing a board portal. Avoiding this single hazard can mean the difference between success and failure in the implementation process.

Four Benefits of a Digital Board Packet

The board packet doesn’t have to be uploaded as a single document
One of the difficulties of creating a board packet is that its sections often come from various members of an organization.
Because of that, it can be a long and tedious process to organize those sections into a single document. With board software, you can add documents piece by piece while associating each document with a particular agenda item.
As you upload documents to the software, they are automatically converted into pdf format and are merged into the board packet as a whole. You can also adjust where it appears in the packet simply by rearranging the agenda.
You can add digital notes and annotations
Whether you’re taking notes before a meeting or jotting down some next step plans during a meeting, we know that board members need to be able to interact with their board packet. Board software offers an easy-to-use notes feature that allows members to click anywhere on the board packet and add a note—either by typing it post-it-note style or by using drawing on their touchscreen.
These notes are easy to access at a later date and are especially helpful for members who want to remember particular questions or comments. There’s also typically a highlighter tool to help members make important items stand out.
You can search for specific information and change pages easily
Navigating the board packet is an intuitive process. Using the search tool, you can search for a specific word or phrase that appears any where within the board packet. This simplifies the navigation of multiple pages of documents by helping members get to exactly what they’re looking for in the blink of an eye.
Not to mention, you can move between pages using several different tools: by using the page slider, by selecting an agenda item, or simply by flipping to the next page.
You can access old board packets any time
Let’s say that you’re sitting in a board meeting and you want to access the reports from a meeting that happened three months ago. Unless you like to lug around lots of paper, you probably don’t have immediate access to that information.
Digital board packets are saved perpetually, unless an administrator on your account decides otherwise. In other words, board software gives you immediate access to old documents any time you’re logged into your account.
You can compare data or meeting notes from three months ago with the new, updated information in a matter easily.
Board portal software is changing the way boards operate by making the board packet a more accessible and efficient document.

Avoiding the Board Book Headache
If you’ve ever served on a board of directors, chances are good that you have a lot of experience reading and interacting with board books, which are also known as board packets. They have long existed as the centerpiece of a board of directors meeting.
Typically, these books contain all of the information that board members will need for the meeting at hand, which usually translates to printing an excessive amount of documents—a practice that is continually growing out of date for these reasons and more:
It’s not environmentally friendly or cost effective
For most large-sized organizations, printing board books means spending thousands of dollars on printing supplies and reams of paper.
